Padmanathapuram palace |
Exhibiting the enchanting architectural style of Kerala, the Padmanabhapuram Palace is a marvelous structure inside the Padmanabhapuram Fort. The fort complex is located at Thuckalay in Tamil Nadu and is a prime tourist destination of the region. Surrounded by Velli Hills, the palace is beautifully constructed using materials like rosewood, stone and mica.
Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal, the ruler of Travancore in the early 17th century, chose the ancient old fortress to reconstruct a new one and dedicate it to Lord Padmanabha. Mantrasala is one of the main sections of the palace and is known for the use of colored mica and lattice work. An interesting feature of the section is its floor which is made of materials like burnt coconut, jaggery lime, egg white, charcoal and river sand. Thai Kottaram (Mother Palace also known as Darbha Kulangara Kottaram), Nataksala (the hall of performance), Southern Palace (Thekee kottaram) and a ceremonial hall are other worthy features of the palace. Secret passages, earthen urns, hanging brass lanterns and a variety of carvings on the columns and ceilings add to the palace’s majestic appeal.
