Agra is known for a cluster of World Heritage Sites approved by UNESCO. The city of Agra enjoyed the peak of glory during the rule of Mughal Emperors who built attractions like Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort in and around it. The city had been known by many names, like Agrevana during the time of Mahabharata and Akbarabad under the rule of powerful Mughal emperor Akbar. The Marathas, after defeating the Mughals, captured the city and reinstated its present day name.
Agra is located on the banks of River Yamuna, one of the holiest rivers flowing through the country. The city was once described as a paradise and was brought to the world map by Ptolemy who also gave the city its present day name. The historians have different views about the establishment of the city, as some relate it to Raja Badal Singh while others to King Jayapala. The recorded history dates back to the beginning of the 16th century when the Lodi Dynasty rulers made it their capital.
The Afghani rulers like Sher Shah Suri and Hindu rulers like Hemu ruled the city for few years, after which it was captured by the Mughals in the middle of the century. The Mughals, who were enthusiastic builders of beautiful structures, graced the city with many attractions. Starting from the first Mughal ruler Babar, who built the beautiful gardens to Akbar who constructed the red sandstone city complex of Fatehpur Sikri and Shah Jahan who gave the city the iconic Taj Mahal, these rulers took keen interest in changing the face of the city.
