Full day tour in Cochin including a visit to the Folklore Museum
Cochin, the coastal city in Kerala, bears the influence of foreign visitors who considered it a convenient trading port during the colonization era. As a result, the city has unique treasures of tourist attractions associated with British, Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese and Jews.
Believed to have been gifted by the Chinese explorers to the Cochin rulers, the Chinese Fishing Nets (Cheena Vala) are extremely photogenic and one of the top attractions to visit. Explore the nets installed in Fort Kochi region, which also accommodates other attractions. Visit Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, one of the oldest churches in the country. Paradesi Jewish Synagogue (closed on all Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish Holidays) is another wonderful attraction, known for its mesmerizing glass chandeliers and gold crowns. Other highlights of this synagogue include Chinese porcelain tiles and clock tower.
Later explore the astonishingly decorative murals, beautiful portraits and royal ceremonial costumes belonging to Kochi rulers at Mattancherry Palace, which is also known as Dutch Palace (closed on all Fridays). St. Francis Church, the oldest European Church in India and the original burial place of Vasco da Gama, is another worthwhile attraction. Have a look at the replicas of Indian naval ships and other amazing models at Indian Naval Maritime Museum. Later visit the local markets to find shops selling huge varieties of spices, oils, artifacts and sculptures.
Conclude the day-long tour with a visit to the Kerala Folklore Museum. The museum houses artifacts and other categories of collectibles from different parts of the country. In fact, the doors and windows of the museum building have been collected from ancient South Indian structures. Lamps, statues, jewelry, puppets, utensils, hunting masks, bells and musical instruments originating from different centuries are on display at this museum. Don’t forget to enjoy the classical dance and martial art performances of Kerala at the theater within the museum.
