Napier Museum

Among the most admirable European-style buildings in Kerala, the Napier Museum in the state’s capital city Trivandrum is truly magnificent. It is not just a museum, but an architectural marvel that blends European style with that of Chinese and Mughal architectures and local Kerala construction traditions. Originally constructed in 1855 and later demolished to take the form of a new building in 1874, the museum was named after the then governor of Madras (present day Chennai).

The gothic style roofs, towering minarets, high arches and intricate patterns done on balconies are the fabulous components of the architecture that the museum building flaunts. Stone-made ornamentations render the old world charm and the surrounding lush green gardens add to the worth. The museum building showcases the beautiful use of vivacious colors and stained glasses.

From stone sculptures to carvings made of wood and ivory there are many amazing categories of exhibits at the museum. Chariots, musical instruments, fabrics and rare collections of the coins belonging to old South Indian kingdoms are among the finest attractions. Bronze idols of various Hindu deities too are worth admiring. The distinguished section called Sri Chitra Art Gallery has collections of art works from various renowned artists. The museum is a prime tourist destination in the city and is visited by the tourists from all age groups.
